How California's CRV Program Works
California's Container Redemption Value program — commonly known as CRV — is one of the most successful beverage container recycling programs in the United States. The program adds a small refundable fee to most beverages sold in California. When you recycle the empty container at a certified buyback center like Recycle Strong, you redeem that value back.
What Counts as an Aluminum Can?
Aluminum cans are the lightweight beverage containers used for soda, beer, sparkling water, energy drinks, iced coffee, hard seltzer, and similar products. Quick magnet check: if a magnet doesn't stick, it's aluminum. You don't need to crush your cans before bringing them in — we accept them whole or crushed.
What Counts as a Plastic Bottle (CRV)?
CRV-eligible plastic bottles are typically marked with CRV ("California Refund Value") on the label. These include:
- Plastic water bottles
- Plastic soda bottles
- Plastic juice and tea bottles
- Plastic sports drink bottles
- Plastic flavored water and energy drink bottles
Do I Need to Remove Bottle Caps?
No — caps can stay on. You don't need to twist off and separate every cap before you bring your bottles in. Leave the caps on and we'll process the materials properly.
Glass Bottles
We accept glass bottles at our Temecula recycling center. Bring your wine bottles, beer bottles, kombucha bottles, juice bottles, and other glass beverage containers during business hours. Keep glass separate from cans and plastic in its own bag or box to prevent breakage.
Tips for Maximizing Your Payout
- Keep cans dry. Empty all liquid from bottles and cans before bringing them in.
- Separate aluminum from plastic before you arrive — it speeds up weighing.
- Bag everything. Trash bags, contractor bags, or grocery bags all work great.
- Glass goes separately. Don't mix glass bottles into bags of plastic and aluminum.
- Bring a photo ID. California state law may require ID for buyback transactions.
Running a Fundraiser?
Schools, scout troops, sports teams, churches, and community groups regularly use beverage container recycling as a fundraiser. If your group is planning a can or bottle drive, give us a call before drop-off so we can be ready for the volume.
